Auction Vehicle Recovery: The Complete UK Collection Checklist

From release documents to wheel damage, these are the details that help an auction vehicle collection run smoothly and avoid loading delays.

Auction vehicle loaded onto a TowPart recovery truck

Buying a vehicle through Copart, BCA, SYNETIQ, IAA, Manheim, Aston Barclay or another UK auction is only the first step. The vehicle must still be released, loaded and transported to your home, yard or workshop. A well-planned auction vehicle recovery prevents failed collections and unexpected equipment problems.

Information to collect before requesting transport

  • Auction company and exact branch
  • Lot or stock reference and vehicle registration
  • Buyer or member details required for release
  • Collection deadline and any booked time slot
  • Delivery postcode and access information
  • Vehicle make, model, size and approximate condition
  • Whether keys are present
  • Whether it starts, drives, rolls and goes into neutral
  • Whether the handbrake releases
  • Tyre, wheel, suspension or steering damage

Do not assume an auction description guarantees that the vehicle can be driven onto a truck. Images may not show seized brakes, broken suspension or missing wheels. Share the listing photographs with the recovery company whenever possible.

Running, non-running and damaged auction vehicles

A running vehicle is usually simpler to load, but it should still be transported if it is not taxed, insured, roadworthy or safe. A non-runner that rolls and steers can often be winched onto a flatbed. A vehicle with locked wheels, heavy collision damage or missing components may require skates, specialist loading equipment or a different truck.

Be precise about Category S or Category N damage. The insurance category alone does not describe the loading condition. The recovery operator needs to know what is physically damaged.

Release and collection requirements

Auction sites have their own release procedures. Some require an app, collection code, buyer number, identity details or a pre-booked slot. Storage fees may apply if collection is late. Confirm that payment has cleared and that the vehicle is released before sending a truck.

Ask whether the branch provides forklift assistance and whether that support is suitable for your vehicle. Forklift loading can help with some non-runners, but severely damaged or low vehicles may need a different plan.

Choosing the correct recovery truck

Vehicle size and weight matter. Small cars may fit a standard 3.5-tonne recovery truck, while large vans, 4x4s, heavy electric vehicles or damaged vehicles can require a higher-capacity truck. TowPart works with suitable recovery equipment, including 3.5-tonne and 7.5-tonne trucks, subject to the vehicle and journey.

Collection-day checklist

  1. Confirm the vehicle is paid and released.
  2. Check the collection slot and branch opening time.
  3. Send release details securely to the transport team.
  4. Confirm the destination contact and access.
  5. Keep your phone available for updates.
  6. Inspect the vehicle after delivery and retain collection photos.
