Motorway Breakdown Recovery: Safety Steps and What Happens Next

A motorway breakdown is different from a normal roadside stop. Follow these safety steps and know what information to provide when arranging recovery.

A vehicle breakdown on a motorway needs calm, quick decisions. Traffic is moving faster, stopping space is limited and the safest response depends on whether you can reach the hard shoulder or an emergency area. This guide explains the first safety steps and the information needed to arrange motorway breakdown recovery.

If your vehicle develops a fault on the motorway

  1. Move left towards the hard shoulder or the nearest emergency area if the vehicle can still be driven safely.
  2. Switch on hazard lights. Use sidelights in poor visibility.
  3. Stop as far left as possible and turn the front wheels towards the verge.
  4. Leave the vehicle from the side away from live traffic when it is safe.
  5. Stand behind the safety barrier and keep children and animals under control.
  6. Do not place a warning triangle on a motorway.

If you cannot reach a safe place, remain in the vehicle with seatbelts fastened, switch on hazards and call 999 immediately. Do not attempt to cross live lanes.

Smart motorway emergency areas

Emergency areas are marked with blue signs and orange surfacing. If you stop in one, use the emergency telephone where available because it identifies your location and connects you to the road control centre. Follow the instructions given before rejoining the motorway.

How to identify your location

A recovery team needs more than the motorway name. Share the direction of travel, nearest junction, marker post, service area or emergency-area number. A phone location pin or what3words reference can also help. For example, "M1 northbound between junctions 28 and 29" is much more useful than "on the M1".

For route-specific information, visit the M1 car recovery page or browse the TowPart UK coverage directory.

What the recovery operator needs to know

  • Exact road, direction and nearest junction
  • Vehicle make, model, registration and approximate weight
  • The fault or warning lights displayed
  • Whether the vehicle starts, rolls and steers
  • Any accident or wheel damage
  • Passenger count, including children
  • Your requested destination

Accurate details protect both you and the recovery driver. A van, 4x4, electric vehicle or badly damaged car may need different equipment from a small hatchback.

Where can the vehicle be taken?

Depending on the booking, the vehicle may go to a safe nearby location, a garage, your home or another destination. If a motorway service station is used as a meeting point, confirm the correct side and direction because many service areas are not accessible from both carriageways.

Preparing for the recovery truck

Keep your phone charged and answer calls from the driver or control team. Do not return to the vehicle until advised it is safe. Have the key ready and explain any steering lock, electrical fault or handbrake problem. If the car has been involved in an accident, do not remove debris or attempt to move it unless the authorities say it is safe.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Useful answers.

Should I stay inside a broken-down car on the motorway?+

If you can stop in a safe place and exit away from traffic, wait behind the barrier. If the vehicle is stuck in a live lane and you cannot exit safely, keep seatbelts on, switch on hazards and call 999.

What location details should I provide?+

Give the motorway, direction, nearest junction, marker post or emergency-area number. A live location pin can support these details.

Can my vehicle be recovered to my home?+

Yes, subject to the agreed quote and journey. Provide the full destination postcode before booking.
